Joshua James Richards
Joshua James Richards is a feature film director & writer and also a BAFTA award-winning and Academy nominated British cinematographer best known for his evocative and naturalistic visual storytelling. Richards has earned critical acclaim for his work on films such as Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015), The Rider (2017), and the Academy Award-winning Nomadland (2020).
Richards’ cinematography is widely recognized for its poetic use of natural light, wide landscapes, and intimate framing that blurs the line between documentary and fiction. His work on Nomadland won the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography and earned nominations from the Academy Awards, ASC, and Critics’ Choice.
Originally from the UK, Richards studied film at Bournemouth University before receiving his MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. His influences span Terrence Malick to documentary photography, and his visual style reflects a deep sensitivity to character, place, and the human experience.
